A Day In The Life Of An Inanimate Object: A Pet Rock

A Day In The Life Of An Inanimate Object: A Pet Rock

I cannot tell you how I got here, only that I am. I have no memory of past events - that gift was given to one of the other creatures of the Earth. As rock, the Creator bestowed upon us the gift of patience. When asked why, the Creator chuckled and replied: "wait and see little one."

We were also given knowledge of our existence - what we are and where we came from. I know that I am a quartz rock, crystal to be exact. I know that my existence started deep in the Earth and that eventually, after many unknown violent earth shakings, I protruded through the surface and into the sunlight.

My time on the surface seemed short before these creatures began breaking me apart. The only piece of me that survived was a small shard that landed in the water and buried in the mud when one of those creatures stepped on me. It would be an unknown amount of time before I would see the light of day again.

When it did happen, I found myself in a great deluge of water being tossed about here and yon. When I finally settled down, I found myself in a small creek bed. Over time, I noticed that my shape started to change. The water began to remove my edges until I was as smooth as any other rock there in the creek bed.

This particular day started like any other. The sun came up as it always did. The animals in the surrounding woods came to get a drink of water from the creek. The peace of the day was soon interrupted by a creature, similar to those who had broken me apart. This creature was dressed differently though - he wore brightly colored clothing instead of the dark furs like the other creatures had.

There were several other like this one - both male and female. There was an older male and female with them. Apparently, they were teachers of some sort as they were telling the younger ones about how the creek affects the local ecosystem.

The young creature with the bright colored clothing happened to look down and see me. He reached down and picked me up out of the water. "Whoa," he said. "I thought you were a piece of glass." He carefully rubbed his thumb over my surface. He got this look on his face like he had a brilliant idea. Instead of putting me back in the water, he stuck me in his pocket.

For the next little bit, I jostled around in his pocket, not knowing where I was going to end up. When I was finally removed from the creature's pocket, he was looking at me with a big grin on his face. "Nate is going to love you!" he said happily. The young male creature carefully put me in a small container with something that felt smoother than water.

I heard the young male creature talking to someone and then the room went silent. Suddenly, I felt movement which, to some degree, didn't stop for some time until I heard the young male creature talking again.

"Go ahead, open it," I heard him say. There was more movement and then light. I saw another young male creature looking at me. He picked me up out of the container and looked at me.

"Sam, it's absolutely beautiful!" the creature said. "But what is it?"

"It's a pet rock!" Sam exclaimed. "All the benefits of having a pet, with none of the bothersome chores of feeding, watering, or cleaning up after one."

Nate looked at Sam and then he looked at me. For the first time in my existence, I felt something - love. I was loved. Nate carefully runs his finger across my surface. "It's very smooth," he said. He leaned over and gave Sam a quick kiss. "Thank you for my present."

"So, have you thought of a name for your pet rock?" Sam asked.

Nate thought for a moment. "Charlie. I'll name you Charlie," he said looking at me.

Nate moved over and sat back against Sam, who put his arms around his boyfriend. Nate sat Charlie on his leg. "Happy birthday, Nate," Sam said. The two shared a long, gentle kiss. As I sat there on Nate's leg, watching to two young lovers, I felt something else - I felt happy.

This is my first story so please let me know how I did at NCNestsurfer.
